About Kian Seng Seafood

Kian Seng Seafood is a story of success, one that’s born out of filial piety. The boss ventured out into the working world since his teenage years in a bid to help relieve his family’s financial burden. He started off as a coffee boy and kitchen helper, before tenaciously working his way up the ranks to become a cook.

He first started Kian Seng Restaurant in the 1960s, with its first location situated near Yio Chu Kang Stadium. He invested in another branch at Ang Mo Kio Industrial Park 1, which is now known as Kian Seng Seafood Restaurant. Unfortunately, he was unable to get the tender to continue his restaurant establishment at Yio Chu Kang Stadium. This turned out to be a blessing in disguise, however, forcing the boss to direct all his efforts towards building the other branch – which has now flourished into the reputed restaurant that it is today!

Described as a mix between ‘zi char’ and restaurant fare, Kian Seng Restaurant serves both comfort food and elevated dishes – at a fraction of restaurant prices.

If you’re celebrating a special occasion, go all out with the Roast Suckling Pig, which is even charcoal roasted on the spot – crackling skin guaranteed. In addition, the Eight-Treasure Rice that’s normally eaten during Chinese New Year is available all year round, which is something you’d be hard-pressed to find at other eating establishments! Do note that an one-day advance order is required for this dish.

Their website currently only reflects their set menus. The Daily Set Menu A for three to four people ($58-168) contains four choices, giving you a choice of Nyonya Steamed Fish Head (Spicy), Beancurd with Pork and Cai Poh, Spinach with Superior Stock, Golden Seafood Roll and a choice of dessert, which is to be determined on the day itself. You can also choose to have an alternative combination of Steamed Cod Fish with Garlic, Sea Cucumber Duck, Broccoli with Scallops, Salted Egg Prawns and dessert. A portion for five to seven people is available at either $98 or $168, depending on which dishes you pick.

The set menu for ten people is more extravagant ($218), comprising items like a Cold Dish, Fish Maw Soup with Crab Meat, Hong Kong Style Sea Bass, Herbal Chicken, Mushroom with Vegetable, Cereal Prawns, Deep Fried Prawn Roll, Hong Kong Style Noodles and Longans with Sea Coconut as dessert. There are another three variations of this set menu, which are priced at $318, $438 and $528 respectively.

If you’re hungering for dishes that have an exquisite taste, luxury versions of this ten pax set menu are also available at $588, $688, $788 and $988 respectively. These include dishes such as the Roast Suckling Pig, Steamed Abalones with Garlic, Mini Buddha Jump Over the Wall, and Black Chicken Broth with Ginseng and Baby Abalone.

The cherry on top comes in the form of the Buddha Jumps Over the Wall set menu, which includes dishes such as Steamed Deboned Pomfret, Golden Butter Crayfish, Lobster with Superior Stock and so on. These set menus are priced at $1118, $1218 and $1398 for ten people, with the price varying depending on the combination of dishes that you choose.

They even have a catering menu for a minimum of 30 people, where you can choose from dishes such as Fried Kampong Mee Siam (Dry), Deep Fried Pandan Chicken, Black Pepper Beef, Steamed Dory Fish with Black Bean Sauce and more. Something to keep in mind once the COVID-19 situation eases and we’re allowed to have large gatherings once again!

Kian Seng Seafood is no stranger to mainstream media, with their dishes lauded by various media outlets such as Channel U, Lian He Zao Bao, as well as the ‘Our Makan Places’ video series by Channel 5.

Restaurant Experience

The restaurant is located within an open-air coffeeshop, which is spacious and airy. It’s not air-conditioned but not to worry, it gets very windy and can be rather cooling, especially at night! Kian Seng Seafood shares the space with other stalls in the day but come the night, it pretty much dominates the area. The red and yellow signboard is easily visible from the main road – you won’t miss it!

Kian Seng Seafood actually functions as a restaurant with a full-fledged kitchen, helmed by skilled chefs who definitely know their way around a kitchen. They offer a no-frills experience that’s focused solely on taste, which is exactly how we like it!

If you are going there via public transport, you can take buses 22, 133, 156, 162, 261 and 853; nearest MRT stations are Bishan and Ang Mo Kio Station.
