Fancy dining in a bungalow? Well, you can do that at Hua Yu Wee Seafood Restaurant, or also known as Hua Yu Wee. It is a Zi Char restaurant located at Upper East Coast Road in a bungalow, with two dining areas, one indoor and one at the rear courtyard.

Established in the 1950s, Hua Yu Wee has a long history of serving authentic Singaporean Zi Char dishes. It is popular among Singaporeans and is usually packed during dining hours, with rows of cars parked outside of the restaurant.

Just walk by the restaurant and you will be greeted with a sight of the past. The old school bungalow’s exterior brings a sense of nostalgia as its exterior decoration looks just like something you will see in the early days of Singapore.

Menu Selection

You can find almost all your favourite Zi Char dishes here at Hua Yu Wee. It offers seven categories of dishes, namely its thick soup, side dishes, seafood, meat, vegetables, rice and noodles as well as desserts.

Thick soups

As the name says, the soups are packed with flavour and richness from the ingredients used. The soups come in either a single person’s share or a choice of three sizes with varying prices.

Side dishes

What’s Zi Char without some fried food? Hua Yu Wee offers a wide selection of finger foods and fried delights such as Prawn Rolls and Seafood Rolls with Mayo. Some dishes come in two to three sizes while the banana scallop is charged by the number of pieces you order.

If you are an egg lover, you can try their egg dishes too! There are three choices for egg dishes, namely the onion omelette, shrimp omelette and crab meat omelette and they come in three sizes each.

Seafood

Hua Yu Wee has a wide range of seafood dishes as it is popular for being a seafood restaurant. You will be spoilt for choice by the array of seafood dishes you can find on the menu with the popular ones being the Chilli Crab, Black Pepper Crab, Lobster with Italian Sauce and more! Just the prawn section alone has eight dishes for you to choose from, either with shell or without the shell.

One customer commented that their crabs are “fresh and huge” and that they even ordered some mantous to go with the mouth-watering chilli crab sauce.

As for fish dishes, there are four types of cooking styles that you can choose from, so there is definitely something for every tastebud preference. You can choose between Hong Kong style steamed fish, deep fried fish with thick duck sauce, BBQ and assam sauce fish. The prices of the fish are calculated by the weight per kilogram and prices may vary.

Meat

Hua Yu Wee is a heaven for meat lovers too as it offers ten different types of meat dishes, from chicken to pork and even venison meat! Its Fengsha chicken is deboned, preserved and deep fried so it’s easy for children to consume it as you don’t have to worry about them being messy with the chicken bones.

Vegetables

When adding some greens to your table, you will find yourself in a dilemma of what type of vegetable to get as there are four types of vegetable dishes, each with multiple dishes under that category. You can choose from garlic dishes, sambal dishes, dishes with shitake mushroom and dishes with scallops. Each vegetable dish comes in 2 to 3 sizes of varying prices.

Rice and noodles

If you prefer to have your Zi Char as an individual meal, you can try the fried rice and noodles that also come in 2 to 3 sizes. The La La Hor Fun and Olive fried rice are signature dishes that are not to be missed.

Desserts

Most Zi Char meal experiences are complete only when the after-meal dessert is served! Hua Yu Wee offers chilled and warm desserts such as Ice Jelly with Longan and the traditional Yam Paste with Ginko Nut.

It is one of the bronze category winners of the Straits Times and Lianhe Zaobao Best Asian Restaurants awards for two consecutive years in 2017 and 2018. It has also been awarded the Singapore Best Food Awards in 2018.

Restaurant Experience

The overall review for the dining experience is good as its two dining areas provide ample space for diners to enjoy their meals. The indoor dining area is also air-conditioned so customers do not have to worry about the heat when dining indoors.

Although Hua Ye Wee has been highly rated and awarded for its food, some customers reviewed that the service can be slow sometimes as the restaurant can get quite busy during dining hours.
